Bone densitometry (DEXA)

Bone densitometry (DEXA)

Bone densitometry is recommended for all women aged 50 or older. Earlier screening is recommended when menopause starts before the age of 50.

It’s valuable to have an initial reference point. Since 30% of the female patients lose up to 5% of their bone mass per year, after menopause. Those patients can then be adequately identified.

How often do women need a bone density test?

  • Patients with osteopenia: annual
  • Patients with normal bone density: every 3 years

A bone density test costs €60 (2014).

Belgian health insurance (RIZIV) reimburses the examination if it meets certain criteria.
