Densitometry Recommendations

When is densitometry recommended?

It is recommended to have a first scan at age 50, or after the first menopausal symptoms to establish a baseline value.

Follow-up Frequency

  • One in three women already has osteopenia at age 50. This group should be examined annually to establish the trend.
  • The 'robust' group should be examined every three years.

Risk Groups for Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is common in:

Thyroid patients
Thin individuals
Anorexia
Alcohol abuse
Chronic steroid use (asthma, lupus, RA...)
